Cute as can be vintage solid silver vinaigrette locket pendant necklace with a basket weave of flowers. The scent locket bears an elaborate openwork design on the front and back, tiny engraved sides, and an oval bail to suspend from a ribbon or chain. During the Victorian days, these scent lockets were referred to as vinaigrettes, small conceits usually executed in gold or silver with perforations. It held aromatic vinegar, smelling salts, or spirits of ammonia. Fashionable ladies wore them to ward off fainting spells and it became a "necessary" carried by expectant mothers from the turn of the century through the 1940's. They were often suspended from a neck chain, ring or chatelaine. An absolutely charming vintage estate aromatherapy perfume diffuser pendant!
