Antique Victorian Tortoise Shell Necklace Mourning Jewelry
Superb antique Victorian necklace made from tortoise shell with a personalized locket style pendant having an engraved initial M on the front. The pendant is suspended from a massive chain of oval tortoise links highlighted with two quatrefoil links, one large and one smaller, which suspends the pendant. This necklace was suitable for half mourning; black was for the first year and tortoise shell considered suitable for the 2nd year of mourning. The necklace dates to around 1850 to 1860 and is truly a spectacular specimen for the jewelry collector!
Measurements: 16 1/2 inches for the chain with the pendant from the quatrefoil bail dropping down a bit over 4 inches.
Condition: The overall condition of the necklace and pendant is superb. There are tiny minor chips in the tortoise chain although not apparent. The clasp does not appear to be original. The colors are superb with the shell supple.
