A wonderfully charming pair of antique Victorian Irish bog oak earrings, beautifully carved in the classic three-leaf shamrock design and dating to the mid-19th century.
Each earring features a thick, richly blackened piece of carved Irish bog oak shaped as a three-leaf shamrock and mounted within a warm pinchbeck gold frame. Fine raised ribs follow the leaves, emphasizing the carving and giving each shamrock lovely dimension. The earrings are suspended from delicate bead hook wires that add an elegant finishing touch.
Irish bog oak jewelry became particularly popular during the Victorian era, when ancient oak preserved in Ireland's peat bogs was carved into sentimental jewelry and souvenirs. The shamrock is an enduring symbol of Ireland and good fortune, making these earrings especially meaningful as well as beautiful.
Beautifully distinctive and wonderfully wearable, these antique earrings are a little piece of 19th-century Irish history—and just as charming today as they were more than 150 years ago.
