An excellent solid silver sliding pencil—often referred to as a carpenter’s pencil—fully hallmarked in Chester in 1912, bearing the maker’s mark H G & S for Henry Griffith & Sons Ltd. The piece is of very good quality, featuring a turquoise-set slider that operates smoothly.
Although originally termed a carpenter’s pencil due to its flat shape preventing it from rolling, this example is slightly shorter and includes the decorative turquoise slider. It was likely intended for a lady’s use, possibly for playing bridge or keeping score. A delightful, functional little antique with so much character!
