A fascinating blend of art, nature, and antique craftsmanship, this Shibayama rolled gold locket pendant is truly a wearable treasure. Featuring seven beautifully detailed insects crawling across the front, the pendant showcases the Japanese Shibayama inlay technique that became highly sought after during the 19th century.
Each insect is crafted in raised relief using luminous natural materials including abalone shell, pearl oyster shell, coral, horn, tortoise shell, and ivory, creating rich color and iridescence that beautifully catches the light. Finely etched gold legs and intricate anatomical detailing give the insects an almost lifelike appearance.
Measuring an impressive 2 1/2 inches, this substantial antique locket opens to reveal two interior keepsake compartments complete with their original covers and rings.
An extraordinary piece filled with artistry and wonderfully unusual character — perfect for lovers of unique jewelry.
