A wonderful large Victorian Scottish penannular brooch kilt pin, set with beautifully banded agate stones. Handcrafted in sterling silver, this striking piece is fully finished on both the front and back, allowing it to be worn with either side facing outward.
The penannular brooch—meaning “almost closed”—is a traditional C-shaped ring with a long pin, historically used as a functional yet decorative fastener for cloaks and heavy garments. Especially popular in Iron Age and Early Medieval Celtic, Irish, and Viking cultures, the design secures fabric by passing the pin through and rotating the ring to lock it firmly in place.
