Victorian Goldstone Pietra Dura Micro Mosaic Brooch
Antique gold Victorian brooch from the late 1800s featuring a pietra dura style true micro mosaic set in a goldstone. A bouquet of flowers in colorful glass tesserae are seamlessly set in a thick beveled iridescent goldstone / aventurine. A thick low carat gold band wraps around the piece with the back having a roll over clasp and hinged pin. Measuring 1 5/8 inches wide and 1 1/4 inches tall, the piece is great to add to a chain and wear as a pendant.
Wearing micro mosaic jewelry became popular during the Grand Tour movement when young women would travel throughout Europe taking in the culture and sights. Italy was a favorite place for it's rich history and known for it's mosaic work. True micro mosaic is flush with the stone that it is set within. The glass tiles are very small and portray the scene with almost no interruption with the face of the brooch completely smooth...a small work of art!
