Victorian 18K Gold Essex Crystal Ring
Beautiful hand-painted cross surrounded by stars is artfully carved in this antique Victorian Essex crystal ring rendered in 18K gold. The domed rock crystal is set in a gold collet mounting joined to a simple band. The rock crystal is backed with foil to give incredible reflection with the stars painted in a silvery color and the cross in a pink and white. When viewing from the side, you can see the carving which is expertly carved. A most unique piece of antique jewelry that will garner compliments.
Essex crystal is a process where rock crystals are cut as a cabochon (flat on one side and rounded, like a dome, on the other side) and carved or engraved on the flat side of the piece. The flat side of the piece is hand-painted and backed with foil or a thin layer of mother of pearl to produce a three-dimensional effect.
It is also known as reverse crystal jewelry. Most reverse crystal jewelry was produced in the 1800s to early 1900s. It is similar to intaglio jewelry, and the artwork can be quite detailed.
