Victorian 14K Gold Hair Necklace Mourning Jewelry
Lovely Victorian woven human hair necklace, circa 1870s, in 14K gold with a cross pendant drop. Each round open work as he blond link is capped on the ends with a 14K yellow gold cup with all dropping to an engraved gold bead in the from which forms the clasp. A braided hair cross pendant with gold bead center swings below. Measuring 18 1/2 inches with the cross adding an additional 2 1/3 inch, the necklace is in incredible condition having no fraying and displays beautifully. A wonderful piece of memento mori jewelry!
Not all braided hair jewelry was for mourning during the Victorian era. Since hair was incredibly personal, women would braid locks of hair from their husbands or fiances as a love token.
