Antique Tortoise Shell 14K Gold Pique Earrings
Rich tortoise shell set with fine 14K gold brads in a Greek key infinity design form these lovely antique Victorian hoop earrings. The circa 1880s drop dangle hoop earrings have gold studs inlayed completely around the outside with curved ear wires and a tubular hinge. The earrings show extreme craftsmanship with the curved double tortoiseshell band. The technique for making pique, inlaying gold and silver into shell or ivory, was brought to England by the Huguenots when they were expelled from France in the late 17th Century. Pique jewelry blossomed in the late 1800's. All original superb antique Victorian earrings!
