A rare William Spratling necklace from Taxco, Mexico, and a wonderful example of his celebrated mid-century Modernist work. Spratling was known for combining beautifully executed sterling silver with organic materials, and this necklace is an exceptional expression of that approach.
The dramatic centerpiece is a large four-leaf flower or clover form made from natural tortoise shell and sterling silver. Small silver inlay dots punctuate the shell, while a sculptural silver border defines its geometric shape. The pendant is suspended from a matching stylized collar band with a hinged construction, creating one continuous, beautifully designed form around the neckline.
At 145.6 grams, the necklace has considerable weight and presence. The warm, variegated tones of the natural shell contrast beautifully with the cool sterling silver, giving the piece a balance of organic texture and crisp Modernist geometry.
