A spectacular and highly collectible vintage bracelet by legendary Taxco silversmith William Spratling, dating to his celebrated First Design Period, circa 1940–1944.
This exceptional sculptural bracelet features eight alternating frog links—four hand-carved in sterling silver with cabochon eyes and four carved from natural amethyst. The squat, wonderfully stylized frogs are full of character, with the amethyst figures displaying beautiful natural inclusions and delicate quartz marbling that make each one unique.
With its substantial sterling silver construction and impressive 70.5-gram weight, this is a bold statement piece with the unmistakable artistic quality of early Spratling. The bracelet measures 3/4 inch wide and closes securely with a tongue-and-box clasp accompanied by a safety chain.
The bracelet bears early William Spratling hallmarks and represents the inventive work produced in his Taxco workshop during the First Design Period, when Spratling was developing many of the sculptural and organic motifs that would become hallmarks of Mexican modernist silver.
The frog is an especially compelling motif, and the combination of carved silver and natural amethyst makes this bracelet an unusually striking example of Spratling's work.
