There is something especially appealing about the simplicity of this Victorian Scottish agate brooch. Dating to the 19th century, it features a beautifully carved piece of banded agate, measuring approximately 1¼ inches, with layers of warm honey, earthy brown, creamy white, and deep black running naturally through the stone.
The agate is framed in sterling silver and retains the original fittings, including the tubular hinge, C-clasp, and unusually long pin stem. The construction and details are wonderfully evocative of its period, and the brooch has survived in lovely antique condition.
Though traditionally worn as a brooch, the piece can easily be given a more contemporary feel by suspending it from a chain as a pendant. Its neutral, natural coloring makes it remarkably versatile, while the bold stone gives it plenty of presence without feeling overly ornate.
A handsome example of Victorian Scottish agate jewelry, and a particularly wearable antique for anyone drawn to pieces with natural character, history, and understated elegance.
