A wonderful antique Victorian mourning brooch featuring a glowing deep-red garnet cabochon and an exceptionally detailed hairwork compartment on the reverse.
The impressive oval garnet carbuncle weighs approximately 6 carats and is beautifully foil-backed within a warm pinchbeck frame. Delicate ribbon-cross motifs adorn each corner, adding to the brooch's distinctly Victorian character.
The reverse reveals an especially sentimental detail: a beveled-glass hairwork compartment containing finely arranged blonde and brown hair, woven with delicate metallic thread. Hairwork jewelry was a cherished Victorian tradition, preserving a loved one's hair as a tangible keepsake of remembrance and affection.
Beautifully crafted from front to back, this versatile antique can be worn as a lace pin or brooch and makes a wonderful addition to a collection of Victorian mourning jewelry. Its timeless design makes it equally appealing to both gentlemen and ladies.
