This remarkable early to mid-19th century Georgian/Victorian cut steel brooch is shaped as a finely detailed horseshoe. Its back is secured with a tubular hinge and c-clasp. Crafted by forming melted horseshoe nails into tiny faceted beads, these steel studs were carefully riveted one by one onto a base plate. Originating as an English innovation, cut steel jewelry spread globally. In 1759, Louis XV urged the nobility to contribute their gold and gemstones for the Seven Years War, leading to the rise of elegant cut steel alternatives. A distinguished example of antique adornment.
