A spectacular antique Art Deco amethyst brooch, dating to the 1920s, featuring 55.25 carats of natural purple amethyst set in an intricately crafted sterling silver floral frame.
Three dimensional flower clusters form the openwork design, each created with beautifully faceted pear-cut amethyst petals. The stones are prong-set in an open-back setting, allowing light to travel through the gemstones and bring out their rich purple color.
What makes this brooch particularly enchanting is its wonderful articulated construction. Each of the three floral elements can spin and move, creating an unexpected sense of movement and dimension when the brooch is worn. Tiny sterling silver flower clusters add delicate detail while helping secure the amethyst petals.
The substantial open-back silver frame gives the brooch a beautifully airy quality despite its impressive size. The reverse is finished with a double-cloak-style pin, including a traditional trombone slide catch.
Measuring 2 3/4 inches tall by 2 3/4 inches wide and approximately 1 inch deep, this is a wonderfully sculptural statement piece. It weighs 29.3 grams.
Amethyst is the traditional February birthstone, the gemstone associated with Pisces, and is traditionally celebrated as the gemstone for the 6th wedding anniversary. For centuries, amethyst has been associated with wisdom, clarity, and the highest aspirations of the human spirit.
