Victorian Pearl French Jet Hoop Earrings
Beautiful antique Victorian mourning earrings, made from gutta percha, featuring a dangling engraved hoop with a genuine pearl swaying from the center. The hoop is suspended from a jet bead and an articulated horse shoe element. While these pierced earrings were for mourning almost 150 years ago, they are a beautiful accessory for today's wardrobe and the sentimentalist at heart.
Gutta percha is derived from tropical trees indigenous to Southeast Asia. The sap from the trees formed a latex which allowed the Victorians to create jewelry, furniture as well as dentistry. Blocks of gray, black and brown were used by the artists to create the pieces.
